Bikram Choudhury Documentary

We want to assure you that this is a fully independent yoga studio with no financial connection or otherwise to Bikram Choudhury or the Bikram Yoga Headquarters. Bikram Yoga Glasgow (BYG) is owned and run by and for local yoga teachers and practitioners.

We would like to take this opportunity to address the recent documentary on Netflix about Bikram Choudhury.

As a result you may be questioning the integrity of the practice and might even have doubts about the integrity of this studio.

We want to assure you that this is a fully independent yoga studio with no financial connection or otherwise to Bikram Choudhury or the Bikram Yoga Headquarters. Bikram Yoga Glasgow (BYG) is owned and run by and for local yoga teachers and practitioners.

We have carried the name Bikram Yoga from the start as this is the specific sequence of Hatha yoga that we teach and practice, in its truest form - 90 minutes as prescribed.

We are first and foremost a Hatha yoga studio, where the word Hatha means to practice physical yoga to prepare the spine for the next stages.  Our sole purpose is to help people heal themselves through the practice of Hatha yoga and lead happier and healthier lives out of the hot room.

As many of you who have practiced with us know - this specific sequence carried out in a hot room has the most amazing benefits.  We believe whole heartedly in the practice - it has saved our lives and changed so many people's lives for the better.  Every single week we hear students who have overcome so many different issues through this amazing practice.

All this being said we can only hope that you will continue practicing and can separate the man from the sequence and rest assured that there is no connection in any way aside from the origin of the practice.

If you have wanted to try the yoga out but have been deterred from all the information in the news we hope that you can appreciate where we are coming from and you come in and give it a go.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and we really hope to see you in the hot room soon.

Aliza, Stephen and the entire team at BYG

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How should I prepare for my first class?

  • Drink plenty of water before class, even a couple of days before
  • Do not eat 1-2 hours before class.
  • You will need a mat, two towels and a bottle of water. One of the towels should be large enough to put on your mat so that you stand on the towel rather than the mat to prevent slipping.
  • We rent towels and mats.
  • No booking is required.
  • Arrive 30 mins before your first class. Late comers are not allowed entry once class has begun and it takes time to register and find your way around the studio.
  • All classes are 90 minutes and are suitable for beginners and advanced practitioners alike.
  • Students are encouraged to stay in the room for the full 90 minutes. The benefits of the series can only be realised by becoming accustomed to the heat and completing the full 26 postures.

What should I wear?

The studio is very warm! Women should wear shorts or thin cotton leggings, sports bra or tank top. Men should wear shorts.

Do you have changing rooms & showers?

We have separate male and female changing rooms and showers.

What if I'm not flexible?

Then this is the yoga for you! Yoga is not about how flexible you are, but about strengthening your body and spine in all directions. All that matters is that you try the right way, go to your personal edge and you will get 100% of the benefits.

What kind of people come to the class?

From school kids to pensioners, from professional athletes to great-grandparents, from common wealth games hopefuls to spine surgery recoveries - everybody and anybody can come to the class and get just what their body needs. Just do what you can and take it easy on your first few visits to the studio.

Do I need to do 45 days of yoga in a row?

No - our introductory offer is £45 for 45 consecutive days. You don't need to come every day but the more you come the more benefits you will get.

I don’t like the heat! Can I try just one class rather than your introductory offer?

We don't recommend doing one class by itself because it can take a while to acclimatise and get used to the different moves. The heat is very therapeutic and is actually the main reason why yoga is so effective at healing the body and mind - your blood circulation speeds up and provides nutrition and oxygen to every muscle, nerve and fibre of your body and brain. In India, where yoga originates, the yoga postures are used to treat everything from depression to arthritis.

However in your first class the heat can be quite intense so we recommend just taking it very easy - sit down when you need to. Just watch and observe more than anything else, and try a little bit of each posture. The second time you come to the class you will receive a completely different experience and will be amazed at what happens.

Please note that we are a cashless studio.  We accept card payment, contactless & Apple Pay.

Please note that classes are temporarily cancelled. We will update the website as and when the Government release further information.  Please follow our Facebook page for regular updates.
